Police have detained a youth of Bakerganj upazila in Barishal for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Facebook.

The detained, Sourav Dutta, 24, is a resident of Bejaj village under Kalashkati union of Bakerganj upazila.


Sourav said that a fake account was created using his name and that he had already filed a general diary with the local police station after becoming aware of the matter.

As anger grew, a group of locals demanded Sourav be handed over to them and staged a demonstration in front of the police station on Saturday.

In response to the escalating situation, law enforcing authorities transferred Sourav to Barishal city for his safety.

On Saturday morning, protestors blocked a major highway, demanding punishment for Sourav and the suspension of police officials involved in transferring him to Barishal.

The blockade was later lifted following assurances from the local administration.

Mizanur Rahman, the imam of the Kalaskathi Degree College Jame Mosque, stated that while he was speaking to Sourav at the time another post was made using the same Facebook account, leading to believe that the account did not belong to Sourav.

Parents of Sourav also said that due to a storm, the area had lost internet connectivity and that they had only learnt about the incident through the imam of a local mosque.

Officer-in-charge of Bakerganj police, Abul Kalam Azad, confirmed that the post had been made from a Facebook account named Sourav Leo.

鈥楢s one Kawsar Hossain of Kalashkathi, filed a case against Sourav alleging him for making comment on Facebook against prophet Mohammed, police started investigation into the matter and ensure safety and security of the accused, the OC added.
