
A group of Jagannath University students continued their sit-in at Kakrial Mosque police barricade near the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna in Dhaka for the second day on Thursday morning demanding accommodation facilities and the completion of their proposed campus outside the city.
Some protesting students stayed at the barricade whole night.
Protesting students said that they would not leave the place until their demands are met.
On Wednesday night, information and broadcasting adviser Mahfuj Alam came to inform the students about a meeting held between the representative team of JnU administration, including vice-chancellor Rezaul Karim, registrar Sheikh Giash Uddin and proctor Muhammad Tazammol Hoque with the government representatives about the demands and the situation.
Mahfuj left the place after a protester through a water bottle on him during addressing the protesters about the outcome of the meeting.
On Wednesday afternoon, at least 50 teachers and students of JnU were injured in police action on when the police intercepted a march towards Jamuna
The police charged batons, fired sound grenades, lobbed teargas shells, and used water cannons to disperse the protesters at Kakrial Mosque police barricade near Jamuna, said the police, students and eyewitnesses.
Three-point demands are – the introduction of ‘housing stipend’ for 70 per cent of JnU students from the upcoming fiscal year and continue it until securing permanent accommodation, full approval of the proposed university budget for 2025–26 FY without any reductions, and immediate approval and implementation of the university’s second campus project in the next ECNEC meeting under a priority scheme.
