At least 10 students were injured as Bachelor of Science in nursing and diploma in nursing students clashed at Rajshahi Nursing College on Tuesday.

Witnesses said that diploma in nursing students had been staging protests to press home their demands.

Among others, they demanded that their qualification be recognised as equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree upon completion of their studies.

The BSc in nursing students, on the other hand, had been protesting against the diploma in nursing students’ demand, and they also held several programmes.

On Tuesday, the situation escalated during a discussion at the college auditorium when some BSc students allegedly behaved inappropriately with diploma students, leading to a heated argument.

At one stage of the altercation, the duo groups locked into a clash and broke glasses of windows and doors at the college, leaving at least 10 from the duo groups injured, witnesses said.

Following the incident, the diploma students also physically assaulted several BSc nurses in the ward 4 of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where injured students were undergoing treatment, hospital authorities said.

Motiara Khatun, principal of Rajshahi Nursing College, said that diploma students had been demanding that their qualification be recognised as equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree while BSc nurses and students had been opposing this.

‘The two groups have been holding continuous demonstrations over the issue and the clash erupted as a consequence of these tensions,’ the principal said, adding that they will investigate the incident and will take necessary actions.
