
Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam, at a seminar in Dhaka on Saturday said that doctors must play a role in reducing the cost of treatment for patients as the cost of the health sector at the individual patient level had reached about 73 per cent.
‘There is a target that by 2030, the government will bear about 70 per cent of the medical expenses and the patient will bear 30 per cent of the expenses. But instead of reducing the patient’s expenses, it has increased further. Doctors must play a role in reducing the cost of treatment for patients,’ he said while addressing as chief guest at the seminar.
On the occasion of World Lupus Day 2025, rheumatology department of the BMU organised the seminar at the Shaheed Dr Milton Hall of the university, said a press release.
Mentioning that patients spend most of their money on purchasing medicines for treatment, the BMU VC said, ‘If guidelines can be followed and evidence-based treatment can be introduced, it is possible to reduce the patient’s medical expenses at the individual level.’
He also said that doctors should prescribe such medicines in patients’ prescriptions that were definitely necessary for the patient and were available at affordable prices. ‘Unregistered medicines or products cannot be prescribed in any way.’
He also mentioned that doctors of the rheumatology department of the BMU prescribed medicines that were essential for the patients and were also inexpensive. ‘So this can be an example for all doctors.’
He also noted that the rheumatology department had developed guidelines for treatment.
BMU pro-VC for administration Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad emphasised the launch of telemedicine services in the rheumatology department for the convenience of patients.
A rally was organised before the seminar by the rheumatology department.
