
Jagannath University is celebrating Pahela Baishakh—Bengali New Year 1432, in a festive atmosphere with colourful decorations, vibrant procession, the university’s first-ever Baishakhi Fair and cultural performances.
The procession, organised by the JnU Faculty of Fine Arts, began at around 9:30am on Monday from the university premises.
It circled the historic Victoria Park and returned to the university.
The theme for this year’s procession was ‘Traditional Rural Culture of Bengal’ featuring replicas of bullock carts, birds, animals, floral arrangements and rural artifacts.
Addressing the students after the procession in front of the science faculty, vice-chancellor Professor Md Rezaul Karim said, ‘This celebration will play an important role in nurturing students’ cultural practices and creativity.’
Following the procession, a day-long Baishakhi Mela and cultural programmes commenced.
A concert began at around 3:00pm featuring invited bands, including Ashes, Chander Gari and Metal Error.
Besides, bands from the university’s Band Music Association, including Kimvut, Komol Gandhar, Offside and several solo performers are also performing at the event.
