The Jahangirnagar University administration excluded individuals allegedly involved in attacks on students during the 2024 student-led mass uprising from the voter list for the forthcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union election.
The decision was announced in a notice signed by JU vice-chancellor professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, also the president of the JUCSU.
According to the notice, students currently enrolled in M Phil, PhD, weekend, and evening programmes, as well as irregular students from various batches, will not be included in the JUCSU voter list.
Only regular undergraduate students who have completed six years (four years for undergraduate and an additional two years for delays) and graduate students within two years (one year for postgraduate and an additional year for delays) will be eligible to vote.
The notice further stated that students identified as involved in several violent incidents in 2024 would also be excluded from the voter list.
These incidents included attacks on students at Rabindranath Tagore Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall on July 14 and 15, the assault and firing of pellets on teachers and students near the VC’s residence on July 15, and the attacks and pellet firings on students in front of the administrative building on July 17.
The JU administration’s decision to exclude these individuals from the voter list aligns with the recommendations of the investigation committee formed after these incidents.
Earlier, on December 31, the university formed a five-member election commission to oversee the JUCSU election and drafted a roadmap for its execution.
As per the roadmap, the draft voter list is scheduled for release on January 10, the final voter list will be published on January 15, the election code of conduct will be formulated by January 25, and the election schedule will be announced on February 1.
