A thief gang stole 159 bhari of gold ornaments in just about seven minutes from a shop at Shimanto Square Shopping Mall in the capital’s Dhanmondi during Friday prayers and fled the scene, said the police.
‘The CCTV footage of the shop showed that nine people went in front of the shop at about 1:00pm. One of them entered the shop while others guarded outside. Seven minutes later, they left with a bag full of gold,’ according to the police.
Dhanmondi police inspector for investigation Abdul Alim said that the theft took place at Crown Diamond and Jewellers on the ground floor of the mall on Friday.
Quoting the owner of the shop, inspector Alim said that the shopkeepers locked the shutters and went for Friday prayers.
‘Then the thieves entered the shop by breaking a lock of the shutter and stole the gold,’ he said.
Shop owner Kazi Akash filed a case with the Dhanmondi police.
Inspector Alim told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Saturday night that no one was arrested so far.
‘We have reviewed the CCTV footage of the shop and nearby shops. We are currently conducting an operation to arrest those involved,’ he added.
