The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Sajibur Rahman Sajib, a leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, in a case filed over an attack on students during the quota reform movement on the Dhaka University campus in July 2024.
Confirming the matter, DMP deputy commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said on Saturday that Sajibur was arrested following a raid in Hazaribagh鈥檚 Zafarbad area in the capital at about 11:30pm on Friday.
Sajibur, the president of the BCL unit at DU鈥檚 Bijoy Ekattor Hall, was produced before the court on Saturday in the case filed with the Shahbagh police station, he said.
According to the case statement, on July 15, 2024, a group of students gathered at Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture carrying out a procession supporting the quota reform movement.
At that time, various associate organisations of the Awami League, including banned BCL activists and leaders attacked students with sharp weapons.
Many students, including female participants, were physically assaulted during the attack.
On October 23, the interim government banned the Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhatra League under the Anti-Terrorism Act on allegation of its involvement in various activities against public security, including murder, torture, common room-based oppression, seat trading at student halls of residence, tender manipulations, rape and sexual harassment at various times after the independence of Bangladesh, especially during the past 15 years of dictatorial regime.
