At least 10 people, including army personnel and journalists, were injured as the ruling Awami League leaders and activists allegedly attacked army members and other people while protesting at the prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s forced resignation and demanding her return to the country.

AL leaders and activists blocked Dhaka-Khulna highway at Gopinathpur area under Gopalganj sadar upazila at about 3:00pm as part of its pre-scheduled programme organised by AL Gopinathpur, Jalalabad and Nizamkandi union units.    


When army personnel asked them to clear the road at about 4:00pm as long tailbacks was created on the highway, they attacked them, vandalised and set on fire an army vehicle, said witnesses.

Gopalganj district superintendent of police Ayesha Siddika said that she could not give any details about the incident, saying that they were going to hold an emergency meeting over the incident with deputy commissioner of the district and army officials. 

‘We are going to hold a meeting shortly with deputy commissioner and army personnel over this incident. Then we will share about the details,’ the SP told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· at about 10:00pm.

Asked for an official statement over the incident, Inter-Services Public Relations director Lieutenant Colonel Abu Hayder Mohammad  Rasheluzzaman said that they would issue a press release in this regard.

Demonstrations continued in Gopalganj for the fifth consecutive day after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and she fled to India amid mass uprising led by student protests on August 5.

Gopalganj district AL general secretary GM Shahabuddin Azam could not be reached for his comment as his phone was switched off.
