A young man was killed in clashes between quota reform activists and the police in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on early Thursday.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost in-charge Bacchu Mia confirmed the news to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.


He said that the body was brought dead at the hospital and later the family returned from the hospital with the body.

Residents in the area said that people from all walks of life, including women, joined the clashes in Jatrabari, Shonir Akhra and its adjacent areas.

The clashes continued till filing this report at about 10:30am on Thursday.

Protesting students, including students of Dania College, were locked in overnight clashes with police.

Police could not bring the situation under control. Five policemen were reportedly injured in the clashes.

AL lawmaker for Dhaka-18 Sajal Mollah said that the clash began at about 10:00pm.

‘The protesters vandalised Jatrabari police station, Ward no 62 Juba League office and set on fire to Hanif flyover toll plaza,’ said Sajal, adding that many shops were vandalised at Demra and Jatrabari.

He said that the situation was out of control.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Wari Division deputy commissioner Iqbal Hossain said that not only the quota protesters but also other of people joined in the clash.

‘People are chanting slogans for reforming quotas. But all of them are not students. Five policemen were injured in the clash,’ he added.
