A detective team of Sylhet Metropolitan Police seized two trucks, loaded with 34,128 kilograms of sugar smuggled from India, in Moglabazar area early Saturday.

The police also arrested the truck drivers, Kurban Ali, 45, of Andharkuta village in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna, and Jiban Chandra Roy, 23, of Goaldihi village in Khansama upazila of Sirajganj, for their suspected involvement in the smuggling operation.


SMP additional deputy commissioner Mohammed Saiful Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the detectives seized the trucks on the Sylhet-Fenchuganj road in Jalkarkandi at about 3:00am and arrested the drivers.

The market value of the seized sugar was estimated to be around Tk 40,95,360, he said.

‘The arrested were produced before the chief metropolitan magistrate court in the afternoon, following the filing of a case under the Special Powers Act 1974. The court ordered their detention,’ the police officer added.

On Thursday, the detective police had also seized six trucks, loaded with 1,20,000 kilograms of smuggled sugar worth around Tk 1.44 crore, on the Surma Bypass road near Shah Paran Bridge under the Shah Paran police station.
