Bangladesh-flagged cargo vessel MV Abdullah with its 23 crew members will reach the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port at Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar today, nearly a month after it was released from Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.

‘Carrying 56 thousand tonnes of limestone, the ship is staying in the Bay of Bengal now and will reach outer anchorage on Monday. We have not decided from which port all the crew members will get off from the ship,’ said Mizanul Islam, spokesperson for SR Shipping, owner of the hijacked ship.

The ship is likely to reach Kutubdia Port on Monday night and they will go to Chattogram Port the next morning, he added.

Mizan also said that the organisation might receive their 23 crew members from Chattogram Port.

The MV Abdullah was hijacked by dozens of Somali pirates from the Indian Ocean and taken to the Somali coast on March 12 in a major escalation of piracy activities in the region.

The pirates attacked the MV Abdullah when it was heading for Al Hamriyah Port in the United Arab Emirates about 600 nautical miles off the Somali coast.

It was carrying 58 thousand tonnes of coal from Mozambique’s Maputo port.

On April 14, the ship was released after paying a good amount of ransom and with European Union ship protection MV Abdullah finally reached Al Hamriyah Port in the UAE after eight days.

The ship loaded and unloaded goods and stayed there for five days.

On April 27, it started for Chattogram in Bangladesh.
