The United International University organised a seminar on breast cancer awareness titled From AWARE to EMPOWER and inauguration ceremony of the AI-based preventive and primary healthcare platform ‘Suswastha’ for UIU family at the UIU in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The seminar focused on educating the university community about the risks associated with breast cancer, with speakers emphasizing the life-saving impact of early and periodic screening, said a press release.
Experts demonstrated how timely risk assessment and regular check-ups can significantly improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality rates.
A major highlight was the launch of ‘Suswastha’, an initiative for the UIU family’s well-being, which was developed by CMED Health Limited, a research-to-commercialisation initiative of UIU’s Institute of Research, Innovation, Incubation and Commercialisation.
This integrated platform will provide all faculty, staff and students with access to a suite of health services, including health education, personalised risk assessment, preliminary screening, telemedicine consultations and continuous follow-ups.
The platform features a dedicated dashboard for the UIU medical centre’s doctors to proactively monitor patient health and allows the university administration to make data-driven decisions to enhance campus-wide health policies.
Presided over by Md Zulfiqur Rahman, registrar of UIU, the event was graced by Professor MA Hai, senior cancer specialist and president of Oncology Club as chief guest.
He shed light on the breast cancer landscape in Bangladesh and the future of oncological care.
He was joined by special guests Dr Ali Nafisa, a consultant in oncoplastic breast surgery, and Mustak Ibn Ayub, an associate professor of genetic engineering and biotechnology, who discussed modern surgical techniques and the genetic predispositions to cancer.
Dr Shamima Akter, senior medical officer at UIU, served as guest of honour at the event.
Professor Khondaker A Mamun, director of IRIIC at UIU and founder of CMED Health, which collaborated on the platform, provided a live demonstration of its capabilities.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from SM Rafiqul Islam, head of genetic engineering and biotechnology at UIU, followed by a free screening camp for attendees.
