To promote environmental sustainability and a clean campus culture, Gazipur Agricultural University on Sunday organised a training programme titled Clean Campus, Green Future: Waste Management for Sustainable Development.
The seminar was organised at the seminar room of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell, the organising body of this initiative, said a press release.
The training aimed to foster a culture of sustainable waste management on campus through the installation of new dustbins, awareness-building initiatives and the active engagement of students, faculty and staff as campus green leaders.
Presided over by Professor Nasrin Akter Ivy, director of IQAC, the event was graced by Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman, vice-chancellor of GAU as chief guest, and Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad, treasurer, as special guest.
Professor Mohammad Sharif Raihan, additional director of IQAC, moderated the seminar.
Mustafizur Rahman stated, ‘Waste management is no longer limited to cleanliness; it is intrinsically linked to health, environment, economy and the achievement of the sustainable development goals.’
He urged all participants to commit to keeping the campus clean and led a symbolic ‘campus walk for cleanliness and environmental awareness’, starting from the university’s main research building. During the walk, the vice-chancellor personally installed a dustbin near the female dormitory gate, followed by the placement of more bins across key campus locations.
The training included interactive discussions, presentations on effective waste practices and insights into how proper campus waste management contributes to advancing global sustainability rankings.
With over 50 participants, including students, faculty, administrative staff, and cleaning personnel, the programme emphasised hands-on learning and collective responsibility.
Participants expressed that if the knowledge and motivation gained through this training are applied in daily life, home and workplace, the initiative will serve as a model for achieving the SDGs.
