The annual budget of Bangladesh Medical University worth over Tk 976 crore for the fiscal year 2025-2026 was approved by the university鈥檚 syndicate on Saturday.

The budget for this fiscal is worth over Tk 175 crore higher than of the budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The projected budget deficit stands at Tk 127 crore 87 lakh.


The budget was approved at BMU鈥檚 97th syndicate meeting, held at the university鈥檚 Shaheed Dr Milton Hall, with vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam in the chair. The budget was presented by the university鈥檚 treasurer, Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar.

In the budget, Tk 37.10 crore has been allocated for research, while Tk 1.10 crore for training, totalling Tk 38.20 crore for the research and training sector.

Besides, Tk 87 crore has been earmarked for the medical and surgical sector, while over Tk 217 crore 32 for student merit scholarships.

Further allocations include Tk 9 crore for public works, while over Tk 25 crore for goods and services, Tk 40 crore 2 lakh and 50 thousand for machineries sub-sector, and Tk 23 crore for cleaning.

On the other hand, Tk 233 crore 26 lakh 31 thousand has been allocated for salaries, while Tk 190 crore 27 lakh for allowances, and Tk 45 crore 15 lakh 24 thousand for pension grants.

To meet the budget requirement, health education and family welfare division would provide Tk 568.37 crore, while Ministry of Education through University Grants Commission would give Tk 144.86 crore and Tk 135 crore would come from own income.

At a press briefing after the syndicate meeting, Shahinul Alam said that BMU had signed a memorandum of understanding with Kunming Medical University, China aimed at advancing academic and research collaboration.

He highlighted that 81 faculty members and 549 students had been awarded research grants, while 437 personnel had undergone specialised training to enhance budget implementation and procurement efficiency within the university.

The proposed budget for this fiscal year includes a boosted allocation of Tk 12 crore for the provision of free medicines to patients. Additional allocation has been earmarked for improvements in information technology, infection control measures, and the acquisition of books and periodicals.
