
A team of the Bangladesh Army arrested five individuals with 4,000 kilograms frozen beef smuggled in the country from India at Jaintapur in Sylhet on Monday.
The arrested are Nazim Uddin, 45, a resident of Kahaigarh village; Setu Devnath, 35, a resident of Chiknagul Rameshwar; and Abdullah, 31, a resident of Hemu Mukampara under Jaintapur; and a truck driver Md Rabbani, 23, of Jabaripur village; and his helper Md Shuvo, 16, of Akashtara village under Shibganj in Bogura, said the police.
Jaintapur police station officer-in-charge ABM Badruzzaman said that acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of army stopped a truck and a microbus on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway at Rameshwar area under Jaintapur at around 5:00pm.Â
After searching the truck, the army personnel seized 160 sacks of frozen meet and arrested the truck driver, his helper and microbus driver and its two passengers, said the OC.
He mentioned that the army handed over the arrested to the police station and the police produced them before Sylhet senior judicial magistrate court on Tuesday noon.
‘The court ordered to send them to jail,’ the OC said, adding that the arrested admitted in the police interrogation that the beef was being taken to a cold storage at Jatrabari in Dhaka.
