Universal Medical College in Dhaka hosted an orientation programme for its 11th batch of MBBS students, marking the beginning of their medical education journey, on Sunday.

The event commenced with a central orientation at the ministry of health and family welfare, chaired by Md Sarwar Bari, secretary of the health education and family welfare division. Nurjahan Begum, adviser to the ministry, joined virtually as the chief guest, said a press release.


Later, the college held a campus orientation presided over by Professor Uttam Kumar Pal, principal of UMC. Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, managing director of Universal Medical College Hospital, represented chairman Preeti Chakraborty as the chief guest.

UMC vice-principal and head of radiology and imaging department Professor Md Wahiduzzaman Bhuiyan delivered the welcome speech. Brigadier General (retired) Professor AK Mahbubul Haque, director (medical services) of the hospital, also spoke.

Senior students and interns welcomed newcomers—including international students—with flowers. Academic coordinator Professor Fazlul Karim administered the oath, followed by a briefing on the curriculum by department heads.

The ceremony also honoured four top performers – Dheeraj Stanley (India), Sanjida Kabir Oishi and Wanima Tabassum (Bangladesh) and Sonika Thapa (Nepal) – from the November 2024 MBBS professional examination.

Students and guardians shared their experiences, and gifts were distributed to conclude the event.
