
The closing ceremony of a three-day conference with special focus on water and ecosystem conservation for climate resilience has recently been concluded at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific in Dhaka.
Institute of Water and Flood Management of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has organised the conference, said a press release on Monday.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change adviser, attended as chief guest while Nazmul Ahsan, Ministry of Water Resources secretary, was present as guest of honour at the closing ceremony of the conference.
Muhammad Moniruzzaman, deputy managing director, Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, Malik Fida A Khan, executive director, Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services, Bangladesh, and SM Mahbubur Rahman, executive director, Institute of Water Modeling, Bangladesh were present as special guest at the ceremony. Chaired by BUET vice-chancellor, Professor Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, Shammi Haque, organising secretary, ICWFM-2025, delivered the vote of thanks at the ceremony.
In the inauguration ceremony of the conference, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change secretary Farhina Ahmed attended as chief guest while embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bangladesh’s first secretary for water and climate Inge Klassen attended as special guest.
Chaired by the BUET pro-vice-chancellor, Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Professor GM Tarekul Islam, chair of the organising committee of ICWFM 2025, delivered welcome speech and Professor Mohammad Asad Hussain, director of the BUET Institute of Water and Flood Management, presented a vote of thanks at the inauguration ceremony.
The event featured insightful keynote speeches, engaging panel discussions, and a special session, focusing on water governance and sustainability.
Leon Hermans, UNESCO-IHE Delft and TU Delft, delivered a keynote on water policy analysis and learning for transformative pathways planning, while Professor AKM Saiful addressed the water and ecosystems in a changing climate: impacts and pathways to resilience.
The conference saw participation from eight countries, featuring 24 technical sessions with 150 oral presentations and 1 poster session showcasing 29 poster presentations.
A special session, titled Youth Aspirations towards Water and Delta Governance in Bangladesh organised by EKN, highlighted youth perspectives in water management.
Three panel discussions were held organized by ITN-BUET, EKN and CEGIS respectively, providing a platform for experts to discuss water resource management, climate resilience, and sustainable policies, engaging researchers, professionals, and policymakers from multiple disciplines.
