Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday accused the interim government of creating the ongoing political crisis in the country.
He said the crisis had resulted from the actions of the government and the National Consensus Commission.
Speaking at a discussion, he alleged that the interim government and the commission had betrayed the nation and deceived the people, causing confusion instead of building unity.
Addressing the interim government, Fakhrul said that the commission it had formed discussed issues of national consensus, reforms, and other matters for nearly a year and a half.
He said the BNP had reached agreement on many issues and submitted notes of dissent only where differences remained.
Speaking about the July Charter and the commission’s final recommendations, Fakhrul said that the proposals presented to the chief adviser had significant differences from what were discussed.
He alleged that the commission had ignored the notes of dissent, despite assurances that they would be mentioned in the final report.
Fakhrul also said that there was no scope for holding a referendum before the national elections.
The BNP supported the chief adviser’s announcement that the election would be held in February 2026 and wanted it to proceed accordingly, BNP said.
‘A group is now trying to delay the election and mislead the people, but there is no opportunity to hold a referendum before the polls. Both the Jatiya Sangsad elections and the referendum will be held on the same day,’ he said.
Without naming any party, Fakhrul said that those who once opposed the country’s independence and the Liberation War should not now oppose the election that the people desire.
He reiterated that the BNP intended to form a government with its long-time allies after the election to reflect the will of the people.
‘We want to form a national government after the election. Our position on this matter is very clear,’ he said.
The discussion was held at the National Press Club auditorium to mark the 53rd founding anniversary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.
Meanwhile, at the fifth national council of the Ganasamhati Andolan at the Engineers’ Institution auditorium in Dhaka, Fakhrul expressed confidence that the ongoing crisis, centred on the implementation of constitutional reform proposals put forward by the NCC would eventually pass.
He cited the resilience of the Bangladeshi people, saying that they had never accepted defeat and would continue to uphold justice and truth.
Addressing the government directly, Fakhrul called for immediate resolution of the existing political problems to enable all parties to move forward together towards the election.
He emphasised that actions should focus on the welfare of the people, urging the authorities to abandon the positions they took that contribute to the crisis.
The BNP secretary general concluded by reiterating the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
