A farmer was killed and at least eight others were injured in a clash over a land dispute in Savar’s Bongao union on Wednesday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Abu Sayed, 50, son of late Montaz Ali of Beraid village under Bongao union. Sayed was a farmer by profession, police said.
The incident took place around 8:00pm on Wednesday when a group led by a local man named Zakir and his associates allegedly attacked Sayed and others with sharp weapons over a long-standing land conflict, residents said.
‘They came with around 30 to 40 men armed with rods, sticks, and machetes. Abu Sayed died on the spot from injuries caused by sharp weapons. At least eight others were also hurt,’ said Jabed, one of the injured.
The injured – identified as Jabed, Hiru, Salimullah, Babul, Alif, Arafat, and Nozomuddin – were admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.
‘One person was brought dead to the hospital. Eight others were admitted, five of whom are receiving treatment in the wards, while one has been moved to the intensive care unit,’ said Rakib Al Mahmud Shubho, an emergency physician at the Hospital.
Officer in-charge of Savar Model Police Station Mohammad Jewel Mia said that the body had been recovered and sent for autopsy at Suhrawardy medical college hospital in Dhaka.
‘We are investigating the incident. Legal action will be taken against those responsible,’ he added.
