A team of Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested former chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal in the capital’s Moghbazar area on Wednesday afternoon for the allegations of conducting dummy general elections in 2024.

DMP DB joint commissioner for South and Admin Mohammad Nasirul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they arrested him from a house of a person close to the former CEC in Moghbazar area at about 1:55pm Wednesday.


‘He is now in DB custody at its Mintoo Road office,’ he added.

The senior police official said that Habibul would be produced before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court today.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, three Swechchhasebak Dal members got bail in a case filed over the assault of former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda by a mob in front of his house in Uttara on June 22.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police on Sunday against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, three former chief election commissioners and 20 others for their roles in three controversial national elections held in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

On February 26, 2022, the ousted Awami League regime appointed former secretary Kazi Habibul Awal as the chief election commissioner.

Habibul Awal, who served as law secretary and religious affairs secretary, joined the Ministry of Defence as secretary in March 2014. He retired as senior secretary to the government in January 2015.

The Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday granted bail to Mohammad Hanif, member secretary of the Uttara West thana unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, and two others in a case filed over the assault of former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda by a mob in front of his house in Uttara.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Sanaullah passed the order after hearing their bail petitions, said lawyer Syed Nazrul Islam who took part in hearing of the case.

The two others are prime accused Mozammel Haque Dhali, a Swechchhasebak Dal activist, and Mohammad Kaiyum, joint convener of the organisation’s Uttara East thana unit.

In the evening of June 22, another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda, was arrested in the capital’s Uttara area, hours after filing of the case. He is now in police custody on a four-day remand.

Huda, a freedom fighter, faced humiliation by a mob on Sunday just before and during his arrest, which was condemned by different rights group and political parties.
