Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman on Sunday said that the party wanted the incorporation of a provision in the constitution barring any individual to hold the office of the prime minister for more than two consecutive terms.

The BNP proposes the provision to ensure that no one can ever usurp power and become a dictator in Bangladesh, he said.

The BNP leader came up with the plan while he was addressing party leaders and activists of Cumilla and Faridpur organisational divisions as part of his ongoing virtual meeting with grassroots of the party.

He also said that with the fall of dictatorship on August 5, new optimism has been added to the expectations of the people of Bangladesh and the language of people has changed.

This changed new language must be read and understood and the optimism must be turned into reality — if not, failure is a must, he warned.

‘So far only Awami League was the open opponent, we understood and knew their attack style. Now apart from them there are numerous invisible opponents around, their position is in the dark, they are everywhere - be careful to face these visible and invisible opponents,’ he asked the party people.

Talking about BNP’s plan to reform the state structure, he highlighted the basic issues of the 31-point programme presented in July last year and said that BNP wants to dig the grave of autocracy in this country in the future.

He said that the party is committed to ensure balance of power between the legislature, judiciary and executive departments of the country and involve wise men of the society in the management of the state.

He said his party wants to introduce a bicameral parliament system to ensure participation of skilled and intellectual people.

He said that BNP has a plan to introduce merit-based allowances for the youth until employment, and to ensure women’s participation at all levels.

He expressed hope that if the BNP family was united and it would be successful as a party again like in the past braving any conspiracy.
