Mobile phone operator Robi on Thursday launched international roaming in 70 countries, purchasable in taka.

Robi Axiata PLC officials, during a press briefing at its corporate office in Dhaka, Tejgaon, also said that they would expand their network to other countries.

Earlier, travellers from Bangladesh used to spend foreign currency through credit card payment or had to buy a foreign SIM card to contact their family at home.

‘Our new roaming packs provide greater data allowances, enhanced features, and competitive pricing. They offer travellers cost-effective data bundles, combo deals, and Asia-specific packs,’ Shihab Ahmad, Robi chief commercial officer, said.

Robi director for customer value solution Manik Lal Das said that anyone can buy roaming packs using Robi balance.

Robi officials said that they have started the roaming facility for their customers with nine different packages depending on data, minutes and duration of the package.

Travellers could activate any of the packages from their My Robi or My Airtel apps without any hassle spending mobile recharge balance.

Robi officials said that they have telecom partners abroad who will ensure a better service.

Robi chief corporate and regulatory officer Shahed Alam said that the new roaming packs purchasable with taka will help the government to get more revenue.

He said that from now on Bangladeshis travelling abroad would not need to buy new SIM cards.

Bangladesh Bank joint director Shahjahan Ali said that roaming packs purchasable with taka is a milestone initiative by Robi.

Robi head of marketing Shaukat Kader Chowdhury said that they were also working to facilitate the use of mobile phone balance for different purposes to promote the idea of a cashless society.

Among others, Bangladesh Bank joint director Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni, deputy director Farzana Rahman and Robi chief people officer Muhammad Shoaib Baig were present at the press conference.
