Three Bangladeshis were killed by Indian nationals in a bordering area of Khowai district in the Indian state of Tripura on Wednesday.
The deceased are Pandit Miah, 45, of Basulla village, Jewel Miah, 32, of Alinagar village, and Sajal Miah, 20, of Kavilashpur village, all under the Gazipur union council of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj district.
A member of the union council, Tarequr Rahman, told reporters on Thursday that the relatives of the victims identified them after seeing their photos sent from Indian authorities Wednesday night.Â
‘Officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh collected the national identity cards of Pandit, Jewel and Sajal and sent them to the police administration of India,’ he said.
BGB 55 battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Tanzilur Rahman said on Thursday that Habiganj district police superintendent contacted the Khowai district police chief to bring the victims’ bodies to the country.
UP member Tarequr said that the three Bangladeshis entered Karengichhara, a bordering area in Khowai district three days ago.
He said that the trio entered India probably to bring cows but a group of hill people attacked them at Bidyabil, a place about five kilometres inside India from the borderline, in Khowai district, suspecting them to be cattle lifters.
‘The attackers threw arrows targeting them and then hacked them to death on the spot,’ Tarequr said, quoting the victims’ neighbours.
Habiganj district police superintendent ANM Sajedur Rahman said that he talked to the police administration of Khowai district over the phone.
He said that the Indian police authorities had agreed to hand over the victims’ bodies to the Bangladesh police in the presence of the BGB after the completion of their post-mortem examinations and other legal formalities.
