A Manikganj court on Thursday sent a Baul singer to jail over allegations of making offensive remarks against Islam and hurting religious sentiments.
Abul Sarkar, popularly known as Chhota Abul, was detained by Detective Branch members from a music event in Madaripur early Thursday, according to the police.
Ghior police station officer-in-charge Kohinoor Mia said that a man named Abdullah filed a case against Abul hours after DB officials took Abul into custody for questioning.
‘Later, Abul Sarkar was produced before the court in the afternoon after being shown arrested in the case. The court has ordered that he be sent to jail,’ Kohinoor said.
Abul was accused of mispronouncing verses from the Quran and providing incorrect interpretations, hurting religious sentiments, added the police official.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a performance by Abul on November 4 at the annual Khala Pagli Urs (hala Pagli death anniversary) and fair at Jabra Bazar at Ghior. A video of Abul Sarkar allegedly making the offensive comments at the event went viral on social media.
