The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has welcomed the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates, while urging the government to ensure fair and impartial trials in other pending cases.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir delivered the party’s reaction at a press briefing at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Monday night, following a meeting of the BNP standing committee.

Fakhrul said the verdict in the crimes against humanity case against Sheikh Hasina and two others represents justice served. ‘After a long judicial process, the International Crimes Tribunal has delivered its verdict while adhering to international standards,’ he stated.

He added that following years of enforced disappearances, killings, extrajudicial executions, and state repression during the 2024 student uprising—which claimed thousands of lives—the souls of the martyrs will find peace, and the grievances of their families will be partially alleviated.

Fakhrul emphasised that both global public opinion and the expectations of Bangladeshis demanded accountability for crimes against humanity, brutal killings, and genocide committed under Hasina’s regime. According to the law, the maximum punishment has been awarded to Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a reduced sentence of five years’ imprisonment due to his cooperation during the judicial process.

He further highlighted that Bangladesh was freed from fascist rule through the 2024 student uprising after a long sixteen-year struggle against authoritarianism. During this period, countless citizens—including opposition political leaders and activists—suffered enforced disappearances, killings, extrajudicial actions, fabricated cases, torture, and persecution.

Fakhrul said the sacrifices of students, workers, women, children, and thousands of citizens ultimately led to the downfall of what he described as the most atrocious era of Hasina’s regime.

He reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to the rule of law and the establishment of justice, urging the people to remain vigilant at all times.
