Chief adviser Muhammad Yunus said on Monday that the next general election, expected to be held in the first half of February next year, would be an election to save the country.

He instructed the deputy commissioners to perform their duties during the election and referendum with utmost honesty, neutrality, and dedication.

Yunus came up with the remarks while addressing the newly appointed 50 DCs, along with the  administrators of all 64 districts at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Dhaka, according to a press release issued by the chief adviser’s press wing.

‘This election is not a conventional one; rather, it is an election to save the country,’ the chief adviser said.

He said that the upcoming election would not merely be a vote to form a government for five years, but had become even more significant due to the added referendum.

‘This is an entirely different kind of election. The nation has witnessed many farcical elections, and we must play our role in overcoming those memories,’ he said.

‘This is a post-uprising election; this election is meant to complete the people’s uprising. Through this election, the century’s course for the nation will be determined,’ he said.

The nation will experience a rebirth through this election, with the deputy commissioners playing the role of midwives, he said.

Addressing the DCs, the chief adviser said, ‘You must learn everything that you need to know. This election must be made both festive and peaceful at the same time.’

A large number of young and female voters are eligible to vote but were unable to exercise their vote over the past 15 years, he said.

International observers are already showing great enthusiasm about the upcoming election and they are deeply interested in seeing how the election is conducted, he said.

‘This election’s success is our commitment to the people’s uprising. This election is a major mission, and we must win this mission to survive as a sovereign nation,’ said the chief adviser.

The meeting, moderated by Cabinet Division secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, was also attended by planning adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, home adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, public works adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and law adviser Professor Asif Nazrul.

Among field-level administrators, Dhaka divisional commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Tangail DC Sharifa Haque, and Bogura DC Md Tawfiqur Rahman also spoke.
