Professor emeritus at the University of Dhaka and writer and columnist Syed Manzoorul Islam died in LabAid Hospital at Dhanmondi, Dhaka, in the afternoon on Friday.

He was 75.


His personal secretary Md Hannan said that the condition of Syed Manzoorul Islam had become critical in the morning and physicians had put him on life support.

‘He died at around 5:00pm,’ Hannan said.

Syed Manzoorul Islam had been treated in the hospital since October 3, after a massive cardiac arrest on that day.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and innumerable students, relatives, and admirers.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, the Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, the Transparency International Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Ghosthi, and different political and socio-cultural organisations expressed deep shock at the death of the veteran educationist.

His body will be brought to the base of the Aparajeyo Bangla on the DU campus at around 10:30am on Saturday for teachers, students, and admirers to pay their respects.

It will then be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at 11:00am. Following the namaz-e-janaza after Johr prayers at the Dhaka University Central Mosque, he will be buried at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur.

Born on January 18, 1951 in Sylhet, Syed Manzoorul Islam did his BA and MA in English literature at the University of Dhaka before completing his PhD at Queen’s University in Canada in 1981. He retired as a professor from the English department and was appointed a professor emeritus in 2023.

Syed Manzoorul was honoured with numerous accolades, including the Ekushey Padak in 2018 and the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1996, in recognition of his contribution to literature.

His noted works include Thaka Na Thakar Galpa, Andhakar  O Alo Dekhar Galpa, Tin Parber Jiban and Nandantattwa.
