A firefighter, who sustained severe burns while battling a fire at a chemical warehouse on September 22 in Tongi, died in the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Saturday.

The deceased, Khondokar Jannatul Naeem, 37, a Fire Service and Civil Defence warehouse inspector, died at about 10:00am while undergoing treatment, the institute鈥檚 resident surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman said.


Naeem is from Sherpur鈥檚 Nakla Upazila.

With the latest death, the death toll in the fire has risen to four. Three of the deceased are firefighters.

Earlier, shop worker Babu Hawladar died on September 26 and firefighters Mohammad Nurul Huda and Shamim Ahmed died on September 24 and September 23, respectively.

The fire broke out at a chemical warehouse beside the Sahara Super Market in Tongi on September 22. Four firefighters and three workers were injured while attempting to douse the blaze.

According to official data, at least 30 firefighters died and more than 380 others were injured while battling blazes in Bangladesh over the past decade.

The deadliest incident occurred in 2022, when 13 firefighters were killed in a fire at the BM Container Depot under Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram.
