
A firefighter, who suffered severe burns while battling a fire at a chemical warehouse at Tongi in Gazipur on Monday, died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shamim Ahmed, 40, a firefighter of the Tongi Fire Station. He hailed from Netrakona district.
Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell officer Talha Bin Jashim said that Shamim suffered 100 per cent burns during Monday鈥檚 fire that broke out at the Famous Chemical warehouse in Tongi鈥檚 Sahara Market area.
In critical condition, Shamim was rushed to the burn institute, where he succumbed to his injuries about 3:00pm on Tuesday.
Shamim joined the fire service in August 2004. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Earlier, on the day, home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury visited five injured firefighters, including Shamim, at the hospital.
At a briefing after the visit, the adviser assured the highest quality medical treatment for the injured.
The fire, which originated at about 4:30pm on Monday, injured the fire service members and a local shopkeeper after chemical drums exploded inside the warehouse.
Seven firefighting units took nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control.
At the briefing, professor Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin, director of the National Burn Institute, that said a dedicated monitoring team had been formed to oversee the treatment.
Among others, Fire Service and Civil Defence director general Brigadier General Md Zahid Kamal was present.
At least 28 firefighters died and over 386 others were injured in the past 10 years while fighting fire.
The highest ever 13 firefighters died in a fire incident at BM Container Depot at Sitakunda in Chattogram in 2022.
