Heavy rain on Monday morning caused immense sufferings for people throughout the day due to severe water stagnation and traffic congestion in several areas of the capital Dhaka.

On the day, 105 millimetres of rainfall were recorded by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department from 12:00am to 9:00am, including 71mm in three hours starting from 6:00am, the highest amount of rainfall recorded this month.


The met office same day also issued signal number three for the country’s four maritime ports as a low pressure area has formed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas.

Inland river ports of Dhaka, Cumilla and Noakhali regions were also advised to hoist cautionary signal no one.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s meteorologist Hafizur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘If 88mm of rainfall takes place in 24 hours, it is categorised as very heavy rainfall.’

‘The 71mm of rainfall in three hours in the morning is the highest amount of rainfall we have recorded this month,’ he said.

Hafizur, however, added that the raining on Monday was normal.

The rainfall stopped at about 11:00am on the day.

Following the heavy rain, water stagnation was seen in several city areas, including Green Road, Dhanmondi 8 no Bridge, Dhanmondi road numbers 7/A, 9/A and 27, Asad Gate, Jigatola, New Market, Dhaka University area, Bijoy Sarani, Sangshad Bhaban area, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Mirpur 1 and 10, Technical Crossing, Kalshi, airport area, Banani, Bashundhara, Banasree, Karwan Bazar, Khilgaon, Mouchak, Maghbazar,  Malibagh, Shantinagar, Shahjahanpur, Rajarbagh, Motijheel, Kakrail, Paltan, Hatirpool and Monipuripara.

In the morning, school going students and office goers suffered immensely on roads while the number of transports on roads was fewer.

Shahana Islam, a parent, said that water got stagnated at Dhanmondi road no 7/A and 9/A near her house.

When she took her son to school in Green Road area that road was also under knee-deep water, she added.

Dewan Jerin Sultana, a resident of Khilgaon area, said that most of the area went under water.

‘Water stagnation was also seen in Mouchak and Maghbazar areas,’ she said, adding that the number of vehicles were fewer on roads.

‘I could not go to my office in Karwan Bazar area as a pipe has been set up in front of the office to remove water,’ said Joyashree Lata.

The water started to recede at the noon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s joint commissioner (traffic) Abu Sufiyan Ahmed said that due to water stagnation, long tailbacks were seen in different areas, including airport, Banani, Mirpur 10 and Technical crossing.

Traffic congestion was also seen at Panthapath, Karwan Bazar, Rampura, Badda, Kakrail, Topkhana road, Motijheel, Shahjahanpur and Elephant Road areas.

In a press release, issued on Monday noon, the Dhaka South City Corporation said that they were trying to pump out the logged water but as the water levels of the adjacent canals and rivers and the exit point of the pumped out water were almost the same, it was taking time to recede the water.

Meanwhile, the met office issued a warning message on Monday for issuing signal number three for the country’s four maritime ports – Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra, as a low pressure area has formed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.

The met office also issued another warning commencing at 3:00pm Monday, which would remain valid till 1:00am today.

It read that rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary south or south-easterly gusty or squally wind were likely to occur over the regions of Dhaka, Cumilla and Noakhali, where inland river ports would hoist cautionary signal no 1.

In the weather forecast, valid for five days commencing from 9:00am on Monday, the met office said that light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind was likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at a few places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
