The primary and mass education ministry has taken an initiative to recruit 2,382 headteachers for government primary schools through the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.
In this regard, the ministry has approached the commission for the recruitment of the headteachers against vacant posts at different government primary schools across Bangladesh, said a press release issued by the ministry on Tuesday.
As per the ministry, there are 65,502 sanctioned posts for headteachers at 65,569 government primary schools in the country.
Against these sanctioned positions, currently 31,396 headteachers are working and the rest 34,106 posts remain vacant.
Of the vacant posts, 2,647 posts are for the recruitment through the PSC, which is also called direct recruitment.
Assistant primary teachers fill the remaining posts for headteachers through promotion.
The release said, ‘The academic activities in the primary schools are being disrupted as many headteacher positions have remained vacant for long.’
An initiative has been taken to recruit headteachers against 2,382 positions kept for direct recruitment, the release said.
The Public Service Commission will soon publish a recruitment advertisement against the posts, it said.
It also said that 10 per cent of the 2,647 direct-recruitment posts kept reserved.
Once a civil appeal case on the gradation of the nationalised teachers is disposed of, 31,459 vacant positions of headteachers would be filled by promoting assistant teachers, the release said.
Academicians and researchers have said that the absence of headteachers in government primary schools is causing learning losses and the transfer of students to other educational institutions, including madrassahs
The situation has led to the deterioration of the quality of primary education and the stalling of different plans, they observed.
To solve the crisis, interim government’s chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on July 14 ordered an immediate appointment to the vacant positions in these schools by giving special emphasis on the required skills of the candidates in selecting the new headteachers.
Mentioning some criteria, including years of experience for the appointment, the chief adviser said that young candidates should also be considered.
Yunus also directed to complete the appointment procedure in coordination with the Public Service Commission.
