The forensic DNA lab of the Criminal Investigation Department has identified five charred bodies found in a building of Milestone School and College in the capital’s Uttara after a Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into it on July 21.

Special superintendent of police of the CID’s media wing Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.


Earlier, authorities said that seven charred bodies remained unidentified.

The death toll in the incident reached 33 as one more victim died on Thursday.

Of the 33 deceased victims, 26 are students of the school.

Till July 22, the number of injured people in the crash was 165, according to the Inter Services Public Relation Directorate.

The authorities handed over 21 victims’ bodies to their families till Wednesday.

Among the deceased, 26 were children, including many less than 12 years of age, two were schoolteachers, and one was the aircraft’s pilot.

Members of the CID’s DNA lab collected a total of 11 DNA samples from unidentified bodies and body parts kept at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, said a press release issued by the CID.

CID in its release said that the identities of five bodies have been confirmed by analysing the profiles of a total of 11 members of five families.

The bodies were identified as Wakia Ferdous Nidhi, daughter of Md Faruk Hossain and Salma Akhter, Raisa Moni, daughter of Shahbul Sheikh and Mim,  Mariam Umme Afiya, daughter of Abdul Kader and Umme Tamima, Lamia Akhter Sonia, daughter of Md Babul and Mazeda, and Afsana Akhter Priya, daughter of Md Abbas Uddin and Minu Akhter.

However, according to the Directorate General of Health Services, the death toll in the aircraft crash stood at 30, reported BSS.
