
Perpetrators involved in the July 9 killing of scrap metal trader Md Sohag, also known as Lal Chand, near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in the capital Dhaka, allegedly created a plot to show the incident as the outcome of mob violence.
Traders in Old Dhaka on Monday demanded the arrest of all of the people involved in the murder of Sohag within seven days. They threatened that they would go for a tough movement in case of failure.
On July 11, a video footage of the brutal incident went viral on social media, which sparked nationwide outrage and concern.
Officials involved in the investigation into the killing said that police had arrested accused Mahmudul Hasan Mohin from the spot while he was chanting slogans against extortionists in a move to project the murder as the outcome of mob violence.
‘Chawkbazar police outpost in-charge sub-inspector Golam Sarwar identified Mohin with the help of the video footage. A group of people tried to resist Mohin’s arrest, but police took a strong stance and arrested him,’ a sub-inspector of the Kotwali police station told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Sohag’s elder sister, Monjuara Begum, filed a murder case with the Kotwali police, accusing 19 named people and 15 to 20 unnamed others and police filed a separate case under the Arms Act in this connection.
According to the murder- case statement, the incident took place between 5:40pm and 6:20pm on July 9 and the case was recorded at about 8:10am on July 10.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman said that he had also seen the video.
‘A group of people shouted at police during Mohin’s arrest, but police successfully arrested him from the spot,’ the OC, also the investigation officer of the murder case, said.
Moniruzzaman, however, avoided make any comment on the police finding of the perpetrators’ attempt to show the murder as the result of mob violence.
Mohin is among the five expelled members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its affiliated bodies.
In the wake of the killing, the BNP and its affiliated organisations Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal have expelled the five members for their alleged involvement in the incident.
Police have so far arrested 7 out of 19 named accused in the murder case.
On July 9, a group of people dragged Sohag from his shop Sohana Metal on Rajani Ghosh Lane and took him inside the Mitford Hospital and hit and hacked him to death with concrete boulders inside Gate 3 of Mitford Hospital, according to police and local people.
The group of people dragged him on the road outside the hospital gate and again hit him and danced while many captured the incident on their mobile phones, they said.Â
At a press conference at the Dhaka Bar Association on Monday, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, a platform of the lawyers associated with the BNP, said that it would not stand for the accused in the Sohag murder case.
On Monday, traders in Old Dhaka threatened with a tough movement if all those responsible for the murder of their fellow businessman are not arrested in seven days, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Jagannath University reported.
The issued the warning at a press conference held at the Moulvibazar Traders’ Association office in Old Dhaka, where leading members of the business community expressed deep frustration over deteriorating security condition and the perceived inaction of authorities.
They also demanded a fair investigation into the killing to ensure justice, strong and effective law enforcement measures to protect traders, increased army patrols in vulnerable areas to prevent violence, and the eradication of teenage gangs, extortion, terrorism and drugs from Old Dhaka’s business zones.
