The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the government authorities to explain why Nobel laureate and chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus should not be declared a ‘national reformer’ for his contributions to state reforms.

The court also asked why the authorities should not be directed to publish an official list of students killed during the July 2024 movement and the anti-discrimination movement, and to declare them national martyrs.

The list includes students such as Abu Sayeed, Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho and Md Wasim Akram.

The bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Syed Zahed Mansur issued the rule following a public interest litigation writ petition filed in May by Emdadul Haque, a journalist and resident of Charchala village in Shohagur under Belkuchi in Sirajganj.

Secretaries from the ministries of public administration, cabinet, law, information and broadcasting, and finance have been named as respondents.

The petitioner’s lawyer Mohammad Ali Zinnah argued that Yunus had led several major reform initiatives and formed eleven reform commissions, many of which are continuing to shape governance.

Deputy attorney general Md Shofiqur Rahman, assistant attorneys general Mohiuddin Hanif and Ekramul Kabir who appeared for the state did not oppose the rule.
