The Rapid Action Battalion has detained a man accused of brutally killing his wife and attempting to dispose her dismembered body in Bayezid area of Chattogram city.
The accused, Mohammad Suman, was detained on late Friday night from Fulbaria area under the Bijoynagar police in Brahmanbaria, according to a press release.
The gruesome murder took place on the night of July 9 at a flat in the Roufabad鈥檚 Paharika Housing Society under the Bayezid Bostami police in Chattogram city, said the release issued by RAB-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Citing local residents, the RAB said that Suman hacked his wife, Fatema Begum, to death after a row. He then chopped the body into 11 pieces and tried to dispose of the body parts by flushing them down the toilet.
The couple were married for ten years. Shortly after their marriage, Suman moved to Saudi Arabia for work. He returned to Bangladesh last year due to visa complications and started driving a pickup van for a living.
The RAB release further stated that the couple quarrelled frequently, which were often settled through family mediation. The fatal altercation on July 9 reportedly stemmed from the presence of several young men at their residence, which led to a heated row between the two.
Neighbours in other flats sensed something wrong happened at the couple鈥檚 flat and as they went to check on they discovered the murder. They along with the building鈥檚 caretaker confronted Suman and confined him into a room. But he managed to break the window grille and escape before the police arrived.
Fatema鈥檚 brother Anwar Hossain filed a case against Suman under Sections 302 and 201 of the Penal Code with Bayezid Bostami police on July 10.
Suman was currently in their custody and would be handed over to the police for further legal proceedings, said the RAB on Saturday.
