Gaan Bangla Television chairman Kaushik Hossain Taposh was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Wednesday evening, just a day after the High Court granted him interim bail in a case linked to the July 2024 mass uprising.
Jahangir Kabir, deputy inspector general of prisons for the Dhaka Division, confirmed to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Taposh was freed at around 7:00pm after verification of his bail documents.
The bail bond was issued on Wednesday by Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman, who acted upon the High Court’s bail order.
The magistrate also withdrew a production warrant for Taposh in another related case, filed in December 2024 with Gulshan police over the attempted murder of a protester, paving his fastest release.
Taposh was not named in that case.
On Tuesday the High Court’s vacation bench, comprising Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Sk Tahsin Ali, granted Taposh six months’ bail.
His lawyer, Syed Abdul Muhaimin Ali Al Razi Nasif, argued that Taposh was not named in the case, no specific allegations were made against him, and that he suffered from long-term cardiac issues.
Lawyers told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that it was rare for an accused to be released from jail the day after securing High Court bail, as the bail order typically takes time to reach different sections of the judiciary and prison authorities.
Moreover, jails usually do not release inmates after 4:00pm due to the evening lockup schedule and take at least 24-hour to take clearance from intelligent officers.
Deputy attorney general AKM Akhtaruzzaman, who opposed the bail, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he could not recall Taposh and he did not know if he was granted bail in July uprising case.
However, Akhtaruzzaman acknowledged that the same High Court bench on Wednesday granted bail to around 30–35 people accused in July uprising cases, as they were not named in the FIRs and no specific charges were brought against them.
Taposh and actress Shomi Kaiser, were arrested on November 4, 2024, at Uttara and later shown arrested in a case filed with the Gulshan police.
Shomi Kaiser is still in the jail.
The case, filed on November 28, accuses him of attempting to kill Ishtiaque Mahmud during the quota reform protest on July 18 in front of Azampur Habibullah High School.
According to the case statement, Ishtiaque was shot during the protest and later treated at Evercare Hospital.
On September 29, Ishtiaque filed a case against 126 people, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, over the attack. Taposh’s name was not among the accused.
