Two metropolitan magistrate courts in Dhaka on Monday sent former state minister for planning Md Shahiduzzaman Sarkar and Gaan Bangla chairman Kaushik Hossain Taposh to jail in separate cases.

Another metropolitan magistrate court in the city on the day allowed a police petition to show detained former lawmaker for Dhaka-7, Haji Mohammad Salim, arrested in a case lodged over an attempt to murder Fazlur Karim in front of Dhaka Alia Madrassah in the capital.

Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Mahbubul Haque sent Shahiduzzaman to jail after the end of his four-day remand in police custody in the case filed over the murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party activist Mokbul in the capital in 2022.

The case, filed on September 30, 2024, alleged that the police and Awami League activists created a ruckus in front of the BNP central office in the capital鈥檚 Naya Paltan area on December 7, entered the BNP office, charged batons and opened fire at the BNP leaders and activists when Mokbul was injured critically.

Mokbul later succumbed to his injuries.

Court officials said that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman on Monday sent Gaan Bangla chairman Taposh to jail as the police produced him before the court and pleaded to allow them to take him in custody for interrogation for seven days in an attempted murder case.

The court, however, set November 6 for hearing the plea.

Taposh was arrested at Uttara in Dhaka early Monday.

The attempted murder case, filed by victim Ishtiak Mahmud on September 29 with Uttara East Police Station against 126 including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, said that Ishtiak, along with others, joined a rally of the anti-quota student protesters on July 18.

As the procession reached Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Uttara Sector-4, Awami League leaders and activists opened fire indiscriminately at the protesters.

One bullet hit Ishtiak in the abdomen, and he was rushed to Evercare Hospital, where he underwent treatment.

Meanwhile, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shahin Reza allowed a police petition to show former lawmaker Haji Salim arrested in a case lodged with Chawkbazar Police Station on October 26 over an attempt to murder Fazlur Karim in the capital鈥檚 Old Dhaka on August 5.

The case was lodged against 104 people, including deposed prime聽minister Sheikh Hasina who fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

Haji Salim was arrested at Bongshal in Dhaka on September 2 and was remanded in police custody for five days in a murder case.
