
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Wednesday showed retired Rear Admiral Muhammad Sohail, former Rapid Action Battalion media wing director, arrested in a case over crimes against humanity.
The three-member tribunal comprising Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood and retired judge Mohitul Haque Anam Chowdhury passed the order after Sohail was produced before the court as per an earlier directive issued on April 14.
The tribunal also granted a three-month time extension for probes into three cases, including the case against Sohail, involving attacks, disappearance, helicopter strikes during the July uprising past year.
The charges against Sohail involve abduction, torture and confinement of Islami Chhatra Shibir leader Golam Mortuza Mahin in 2012.
The tribunal asked the investigation agency to complete the probe into the case against Sohail by September 15.
The ICT had earlier issued a warrant for Sohail’s production in the case involving the abduction and enforced disappearance of Mortuza from Rajshahi.
According to the complaint, Mortuza was allegedly picked up by RAB members from the Rabindra Sarobar area in the capital Dhaka.
He claimed that he was held at a secret RAB detention centre and released after 47 days.
Meanwhile, the investigation agency requested the tribunal to show Awami League leader and former industries minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder arrested in connection with crimes against humanity at Mirpur during the July mass uprising past year.
The tribunal granted three more months to complete the investigation into the Mirpur case by September 15.
The extension was given after former Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner for Mirpur Division, Moinul Islam, was produced before the court.
The tribunal also directed the investigation agency to finish its probe by September 15 in another case involving former Detective Branch chief Harun-or-Rashid and former Rangamati additional superintendent of police Ishtiaq Ahmed.
The case involves attacks on the July uprising demonstrators who were allegedly located by drones and targeted from helicopters.
Investigators claim that the police provided demonstrators’ locations to law enforcers and Awami League leaders.
All the accused, except Harun-or-Rashid, are currently in jail following their arrests.
Appearing for the investigation agency, prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim and Shahidul Sarder sought time to complete the probes in the three cases.
