Leaders of Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan Bangladesh, a civil rights organisation, on Wednesday demanded withdrawal of ‘false and harassing’ cases, mostly filed over luring people with loan promises and involvement in sabotage.

They raised the demand at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka and handed over a memorandum to home adviser in this regard.

The memorandum also demanded government initiative to grant bail to the accused persons.

The organisation’s spokesperson Abul Bashar read a written statement and said that the organisation had been working against corruption since 2021.

As part of the organisation’s campaign to create public opinion, it collected signatures of 1,80,00,000 people for a draft law to recover embezzled and laundered money to provide interest-free loans to the ordinary people, said Bashar claiming that the law enforcement agencies foiled their pre-announced rally at Shahbagh on November 25, 2024.

Mostly workers and farmers, including women, from villages came to join the rally but 18 cases were filed and many were arrested and harassed on that day, said Bashar.

He said that over 150 people, including women, and about 2,500 unnamed people were sued in the cases mostly filed for allegedly luring people with loan promises and involvement in sabotage.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that a misunderstanding took place on that day as cheating over loans was not intended.

He called for government attention to consider the movement against corruption from its merit.

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum expressed solidarity with the two demands saying that holding rallies is a democratic right of the people.

The organisation’s founding convener ABM Mostafa Amin, its senior member secretary Syed Harun-or-Rashid, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon and others spoke at the press conference.
