Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has recently held a seminar titled Bangladeshi Films: In Search of Own Language at the seminar room of Bangla department of the university in Sylhet.
National Film Award-winning filmmaker and poet Nurul Alam Atique delivered a lecture as resource person for the project of SUST Research Centre titled Pre-Independence National Consciousness in Bangla films conducted by SUST Bangla department associate professor Md Masud Parvaj.
Presided over by Professor Shirin Akter, SUST Writing Centre director Professor Mohammad Morad was present as chief guest while writer and journalist Dhrubo Sadiq also spoke at the seminar.
Nurul Alam Atique highlighted how film production and trade developed in the Bengali region starting from the history of the emergence of films in Europe.
He identified the way the geographical structure of this region emerged in Bangla films during the pre-independence period and shed light on the river-centric films Jago Hua Savera, Nadi O Nari, Je Nadi Moru Pathe and Anwara.
Regarding the role of the jute industry behind the involvement of Bengali Muslims in the film industry in this region, he said that the money that could be obtained from the jute trade was invested in the film industry and it has a connection with the history of cinema halls being built next to the jute mills in the Bengal region after the partition.
He also said that films that represented the people, land and above all life of people of this region and have somewhat unique characteristics from films in other languages, therefore, they are considered native language films of this region.
鈥楾he life of people every region of the world has specific characteristics, so the world of films of that region needs to be created in its own way. And that will be the native language of Bangladeshi films. Otherwise, our films will remain as examples of imitations of films in other languages.鈥� 聽
Poet and SUST Bangla department professors Zafir Setu, Farjana Siddika and Amdadul Haque gave their opinions about the seminar at the event.
