
Immigration officials arrested actress Nusraat Faria Mazhar at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Dhaka on Sunday afternoon while she was going to Thailand.
Vatara police station officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam said that she was detained by immigration officials at about 2:30pm on Sunday.
‘She is accused in an attempt to murder case filed with the Vatara police station,’ he said, adding that she was taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s detective branch office on Mintoo Road in the capital Dhaka.
DMP detective branch joint commissioner for south and admin Mohammad Nasirul Islam said that Nusraat was taken to the DB office at about 4:00pm.
Quoting the immigration officials, he said that Nusraat attempted to go to Thailand by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.
‘We are interrogating her in an attempted murder case filed with the Vatara police station,’ he added.
In a film named ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’, a biopic about the country’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Nusraat played the role of Sheikh Hasina before Hasina’s ouster as prime minister.
A mass uprising in July-August past year overthrew the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League.
On May 3, a case was filed against at least 17 artistes, including actress and former Awami League lawmaker for reserved seat Suborna Mustafa, and actresses Apu Biswas, Nipun Akter and Nusraat in a case of attempted murder committed during the July-August mass uprising following a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court order on April 28.
The plaintiff, Emanul Haque, 35, filed the case against 283 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the artistes.
The plaintiff alleged that he sustained bullet injury on his right leg at the Pacca rasta area under the Vatara police station in Dhaka and became unconscious on July 19, 2024, during the student movement against discrimination.
The other artistes accused in the case include actresses Meher Afroz Shaon, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Rokeya Prachi, Urmila Srabanti Kar, Tanveen Sweety, Jyotika Jyoti, Sohana Saba, Zakia Moon and actors Azizul Hakim, Jayed Khan and Saimon Sadik.
