Readymade garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for about three hours protesting at the death of a female worker in a road accident in Gazipur on Tuesday.

The deceased worker is Champa Akter, 18, who joined Interloop BD Limited Garment on Gacha Hariken road on May 4 as an assistant.

Champa, hailed from Hararkandi village of the Netrakona district, was hit by a truck while crossing the BRT lane on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on her way to work at about 8:00am.

After news of her death spread, her colleagues along with workers from other garment factories blocked both sides of the highway by setting tyres on fire and began protesting.

The blockade caused long traffic congestion on the road.

The agitated workers also shattered glass of several vehicles during the protest.

Later, several garment factories were declared closed to prevent any untoward incidents.

Ali Mohammad Rashed, officer-in-charge of the Ghacha police station under the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said that with the help of the army and the administration the workers were persuaded to clear the road at about 11:00am.

The body has been recovered and legal action in this regard is under way, the OC added.
