
At least 12 people were killed by lightning strikes in seven districts on Monday.
The United News of Bangladesh reported that eight people were killed by lightning strikes in Cumilla, Chandpur and Kishoreganj districts.
In Cumilla, four people, including two schoolboys, were killed by lightning at Barura and Muradnagar in the district.
Witnesses said that Fahad Hossain, 13, son of Khokon Mia of Payalgaccha village, and Saimon Hossain, 13, son of Abdul Barek, were killed when a streak of thunderbolt struck them while flying kites at noon at Barura.
Both of them were class VI students of Boroharipur High School.
In another incident, Nikhil Debnath, 64, and Jewel Bhuiyan, 30, were killed while working at their paddy fields at Korbanpur Purbapara under Muradnagar.
In Kishoreganj, three people were killed as lightning struck them in different places.
Witnesses said that Fulesa Begum, 65, a resident of Raniganj Kewarjor under Mithamain in the district, was killed by a thunderbolt while working outside her house around 8:00am.
Besides, Indrajit Das, 36, a resident of Halalpur village, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him while working at a paddy field amid rain in the morning.
Meanwhile, Swadhin Mia, 14, son of Idris Mia of Khayerpur village under Aushtagram in the district, was killed when a streak of thunderbolt struck him while cutting paddy at Khayerpur haor, said Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Aushtagram police station.
In Chandpur, Bishakha Rani Sarkar, 35, resident of Nahara village under Kachua in the district, died amid rain coupled with thundershowers while collecting paddy at the field.
Sohel Rana, Kachua Upazila Health and Family Planning officer, said that Bishakha might have died after being panicked by the lightning strike.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that four people, including a minor boy, were killed in separate lightning strikes in Netrakona, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar.
The deceased were Arafat, 10, son of Abdus Salam of Tiyashree under Madan in Netrakona, Rimon Talukder, 20, son of Jahed Talukdar of Atgaon village under Sulla in Sunamganj, Durbasha Das, son of Kalabashir Das of Ariyamughur village in Baniachong upazila of Habiganj and Makhon Robi Das, 48, of Borolekha upazila in Moulvibazar.
According to local union parishad member Motahar Hossain, Arafat was struck by lightning around 6:30am while on his way to his madrassah at Tiyashree.
Sulla police station OC Md Shafiqul Islam said that Rimon was herding cows near Kalikota Haor close to his village when he was struck by lightning during light drizzle around 6.30am.
