Seven people, including three women and a child, were killed and 31 others injured when a running bus veered off the road to plunge into a ditch in Faridpur on Tuesday.

Also four other road accidents killed five men the same day in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila, Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila, Barguna’s Amtali upazila and Bhola sadar upazila.


The United News of Bangladesh reported that seven people were killed and 31 others injured when a bus belonging to Farabi Paribahan swerved off the road and crashed into an electric pole before falling into a roadside ditch in Bakhunda area of Faridpur sadar upazila. 

The deceased are Fajirun Nesa of Mollabari in Faridpur Sadar, Joar Sardar and his son Iman Sardar of Nagarkanda, Dipa Khan of Nagarkanda in Faridpur, Ajibur of Lalmonirhat, Bharoti Sarkar of Chandpur and Srabon Hasan Alom of Hajiganj in Chandpur.

Kotwali police officer-in-charge Asaduzzaman said that three women and a child were among the deceased. ‘Five people died on the spot and 32 others were injured in the accident.’

The injured passengers were taken to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital where two of them died later.

Nazrul Islam, senior station officer of Faridpur Fire Service, said that they managed to rescue some victims trapped in the bus and sent them to the hospital.

Maruf Hossain, assistant superintendent of Faridpur highway police, said that probably the accident occurred when the speedy bus tried to overtake another on the highway.

Faridpur deputy commissioner Quamrul Hasan Molla said that a probe body would be formed to investigate the accident.

Besides, the administration would allocate Tk 25,000 for the burial and cremation of the deceased and bear the medical expenses of the injured, he said.

In another incident, the UNB reported that two people were killed and four others injured as a speeding bus rammed into a CNG-run auto rickshaw on Cumilla-Sylhet highway in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila.

The deceased were identified as Tanvir, 23, of Nabinagar upazila’s Nazardaulatpur village, and Rafiqul Islam, 25, of Ashuganj upazila’s Lalpur village, said Khatihata highway police sub-inspector Asifuzzaman.

The injured are auto-rickshaw driver Mizanur Rahman, passengers Saiful Islam, Riazul Islam and Khokan Mia.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported that a pedestrian was killed when a bus hit him at Baushiya Pakhi Mor in Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila.

The deceased is Jahangir Alam, 47, resident of Dirghabhumi village of Brahmanbaria, said Bhoberhcar Highway Police out-post in-charge Shawkat Hossain. 

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that a schoolteacher was killed after a bus hit his motorcycle at Daktarbari on Amtoli-Patuakhali road in Amtoli upazila of Barguna.

The deceased was Md Khalilur Rahman, 45, an assistant teacher of a primary school in Amtoli upazila.

Amtoli police officer-in-charge Arifur Rahman said that a case was filed in this connection.

BSS reported that a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader was killed and two others were injured after their motorcycle plunged into a ditch when it tried to save a dog on the road at Madrasa Bazar in Bhola sadar upazila.

The deceased is Humayun Kabir, 50, of Sikderpara village of Char Subhi union under Daulatkhan upazila of the district.

He was the general secretary of Char Subhi union’s Ward 5 unit BNP, said Sadar Model Police officer-in-charge Abu Shahadat M Hasnain Parvez.
