
Several hundred people became homeless and a sawmill and about 20 motor garages were burnt in two fire incidents at Karail slum and Khilgaon in the capital of Friday night and early Saturday.
The Karail slum in the capital’s Banani caught fire at about 12:44am on Saturday.
Banani police station officer-in-charge Rasel Sarowar said that 100–150 shanties at the slum were burnt to ashes.
Fire Service and Civil Defence warehouse inspector Md Anwarul Islam said that the blaze was fully doused at about 2:45am after about two hours of effort by 10 units of firefighters.
Fire service officials primarily believed that the fire originated from a gas stove.
The exact cause of the fire, however, could be known after an investigation, they said.
At Khilgaon, a fire that broke out at a sawmill near Taltola Bazar and destroyed the sawmill and at least 20 garages on Friday night, said the fire service director for operations and maintenance Tajul Islam Chowdhury.
The fire service believed that the fire originated due to gas cylinder explosion at the sawmill, he said.
Anwarul said that the fire that broke out at about 7:30pm was fully doused at about 11:30pm on Friday after four hours of effort by nine units of firefighters.
