The Dhaka Metropolitan Police started to check different vehicles by setting up check-posts across Bangladesh capital Dhaka since Thursday morning.
They started to check vehicles for controlling law and order situation and preventing sabotage, officials said.
Law enforcement agencies have beefed up security in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country as arson and crude bomb attacks continued at places on Wednesday, ahead of the possible announcement of the date for delivering the verdict in a crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.
The incidents occurred days after the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, announced a ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for Thursday, the day the International Crimes Tribunal is scheduled to set the date for delivering its verdict in the case over atrocities committed across the country during the July uprising.
Since 7:00am on Thursday, DMP’s traffic and crime divisions had started checking vehicles at different check-posts.
The check-posts were set up in different areas, including at the entrance of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, in front of BTV Bhaban in Rampura, Notun Bazar and Sabujbagh.
DMP's senior system analyst (traffic) Md Nurus Samad said that the posts had been set up to check the law and order situation.
Especially the motorcycles were being checked as most of the sabotage acts were conducted by the motorcyclists, he added.
The Hasina-led Awami League regime was ousted from power amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024.
