The police claimed on Wednesday that Tarik Saif Mamun was shot dead in the capital’s Sutrapur area on Monday due to an underworld conflict in Dhaka.
They said that the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested five suspects, including two shooters, in separate drives in Sylhet, Narsingdi and Dhaka on Tuesday.
The arrestees are Faruk Hossain Faisal, 38, Robin Ahmed alias Piyas, 25, Md Rubel, 34, Shamim Ahmed, 22, and Md Yusuf alias Jibon, 42.
Of them, Faruk and Robin opened fire on Mamun and they were hired by a ‘listed crime suspect’ Roni, the DB claimed, referring to the primary information extracted from the arrestees.
The police also recovered two pistols used in the murder, six bullets, two magazines, a motorcycle, and Tk 1,53,640 in cash from the arrestees.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s DB chief Md Shafiqul Islam said these at a press conference at the metropolitan police’s media centre on Wednesday.
He said that Mamun and Roni were associated with ‘listed top crime suspect’ Sanjidul Hassan Emon. Later, they fell apart due to a dispute.
Roni hired the two assailants and paid Tk 1 lakh each for the killing, he said.
He said that Roni and Faruk planned to kill Mamun several times but failed.
The DB officer said that the duo again planned to kill Mamun on November 10, the day when Mamun was scheduled to appear before the court in a murder case.
The CCTV footage that went viral on social media showed that two armed individuals shot Mamun, an accused in the actor Sohel Chowdhury murder case, multiple times at close range in front of the Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital at Sutrapur when Mamun was returning after appearing before a Dhaka court in a murder case.
As planned, Faruk and Robin opened fire targeting Mamun at Sutrapur on November 10, he said, adding that Roni, now in hiding, provided the firearms.
He said that the shooters fled the scene immediately after killing Mamun and handed over the firearms to Rubel at Rayerbazar. Later, Rubel handed over the firearms to Yusuf.
Faruk, Robin, Shamim and Rubel then went to Sylhet to flee the country by crossing the border. Having failed, they again attempted to flee the country using the Satkhira border, he said.
A DB team detained them from Narsingdi while they were on their way to Satkhira from Dhaka, he added.
Shafiqul said that Mamun’s family did not file any case in connection with the murder until Wednesday afternoon.Â
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Wednesday granted a four-day remand to the five accused in the arms case filed with the Mohammadpur police station.
Judge Partha Bhadra of the court passed the order after hearing petitions filed by the police.
The application was submitted by the investigation officer, sub-inspector Sajjad Hossain of DB.
