Actor Sohel Chowdhury murder accused, who was returning after a court appearance over another killing, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in front of the Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital at Sutrapur in the capital on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Tarik Saif Mamun, 55, hailing from Lakshmipur Sadar upazila and was an accused in a few murder and other cases.
According to the police, Mamun was associated with ‘listed top crime suspect’ Sanjidul Hassan Emon. Later, they had fallen apart due to a dispute.
They both were accused in the murder cases of actor Sohel Chowdhury, who was shot dead in Banani on Dec 18, 1998.
Mamun was also accused in the murder case of 25-year-old Zahid Amin Himel, who was shot dead in the Mohammadpur PC Culture Housing area on the night of February 25, 1997.
CCTV footage circulating on social media showed Mamun running and trying to enter the hospital through its gate.
At that moment, two armed individuals from behind shot him multiple times at a close range before fleeing the scene.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Lalbagh Division deputy commissioner Mollik Ahsan Uddin Sami told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident occurred at about 11:00am.
‘No case was filed yet in this connection. However, we are trying to arrest the killers and an investigation is going on to determine the motive of the killing,’ he said.
The Lalbagh DC also said that Mamun was a listed top criminal and he had been in prison for 26 years.
Mohibullah, ward master at the hospital, said that gunshots were heard near the hospital at around 11:00 am.
Hospital people found the victim lying in a pool of blood on the road before the hospital’s main gate, he said.
Mamun was immediately taken to the Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital.
Due to his worsening condition he was quickly transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had already been dead.
The victim’s cousin Hafiz said, ‘My brother Mamun was an ordinary person. I have no idea why he has been killed. He had no political affiliations and I have no idea about who has committed the murder or why.’
While talking to media at the hospital, victim’s wife Dipa said that Mamun owned a garment business in Mirpur and the couple was living in Aftabnagar with their two daughters.
Mamun left home at about 9:00am on Monday for a court hearing at the Judge Court, she said, adding that shortly afterwards, she received a phone call informing her of Mamun’s death.
‘I don’t know who killed my husband. I demand that the perpetrators be brought to book,’ she said.
In September 2023, miscreants allegedly loyal to Emon fired at Mamun and stabbed him in Tejgaon Industrial Area. Mamun managed to escape with several injuries.
During the attack, stray bullets hit Bhuban Chandra Shil, 55, a lawyer, in the head when he was passing through the area on a motorbike. He later succumbed to his injuries.
