The police on Sunday evening recovered the body of a Chittagong University student with severed tendons in his hands and legs from a bush near the Outer Ring Road in Chattogram city’s Anandabazar area.
The deceased was identified as Shamim Maksud Khan Joy, 26, a resident of the city’s Baropool area in Bandar and originally from Barishal.
He had recently enrolled in a master’s programme in computer engineering at the University of Chittagong after completing his bachelor’s degree in computer science and technology from the American International University–Bangladesh (AIUB) in Dhaka.
According to the police, locals found Shamim severely injured in a bush near Sunset Point Beach and Resort around 3:00pm and alerted a police patrol on the Outer Ring Road.
Halishahar police rushed to the spot, rescued him, and first took him to a private hospital.
He was later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared him dead.
‘Both hands and legs were found with tendons cut,’ said Monirul Karim, sub-inspector of Bandar police. ‘An eyewitness told us that the victim, while still conscious, said he had injured himself. We are currently verifying the statement.’
Initially, Halishahar police handled the case, thinking the location was under their jurisdiction.
The body was later transferred to Bandar police around 2:00am Monday, after which the family identified him at the CMCH.
The police said Shamim had left his home around noon on Sunday after receiving a phone call.
He told his mother he was going to attend a job interview and meet someone.
The case is being investigated with both suicide and murder in consideration, the police said.
The family is in the process of filing a case over the incident.
